In a touching farewell, Jupiter the lion, rescued from a life of abuse in a circus, said goodbye to his beloved caretaker after two decades together.
Jupiter, a Colombian lion, gained fame while living at Villa Lorena, an extraordinary animal refuge that houses hundreds of abused animals.

Rescued from a circus where he suffered abuse and had his claws removed, Jupiter found a haven under the care of Ana Julia Torres.
Villa Lorena is known for its unique mission to care for animals previously owned by drug traffickers who had been apprehended.

Ana Julia Torres, the dedicated caretaker of Villa Lorena, looks after a diverse range of animals, including four lions, nine Bengal tigers, jaguars, cougars, a crocodile, a speckled bear, an ostrich, Jocko the chimpanzee, spider monkeys, and hundreds of brightly colored birds.
According to Ana Julia, all these animals share a common history of abuse, with many being lame, missing limbs, blind, or suffering from other severe injuries.
Initially distrustful and fearful of humans due to his traumatic past, Jupiter gradually overcame his fears under Ana Julia’s loving care.

However, authorities removed Jupiter from Villa Lorena due to reported issues with documentation for keeping the lion.
Tragically, Jupiter was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer and anemia shortly after being relocated. He quickly deteriorated, losing weight and becoming severely ill.
Ana Julia had the chance to visit Jupiter one last time at the Los Caimanes Zoo, where she discovered his kidney and liver damage, as well as his extreme weight loss.

Jupiter passed away in 2020 due to liver cancer, but his memory continues to live on. His story is a testament to animals’ resilience and capacity for love, even after enduring immense suffering.
Jupiter’s journey from a life of abuse to finding love and care serves as a reminder of the profound impact that compassion and dedication can have.
Rest in peace, Jupiter. Your spirit will forever be cherished, and heartfelt thanks go to Ana Julia Torres for her unwavering love and dedication to rescuing and nurturing animals in need.
