Many dogs face difficult lives without experiencing love or comfort, but one dog, Ruby, a PitBull, was able to find hope in the most unexpected way thanks to the compassionate efforts of a woman named MaryAnn.

Ruby had spent her entire life in the woods, surviving only on scraps and constantly living in fear. Her malnourished state was evident, with her ribs showing prominently. MaryAnn first encountered Ruby alone while wandering through the forest, and her heart ached at the sight of the struggling dog.

Though MaryAnn tried to approach Ruby, the shy dog only allowed a few hesitant pats before running back into the safety of the woods. Concerned that the upcoming winter could be dangerous for the frail dog, MaryAnn was determined to change Ruby’s fate.

MaryAnn started visiting Ruby every day, bringing food as a gesture of goodwill to prove there was no need to be afraid. Initially, Ruby would just take the food and disappear into the forest. However, after several weeks and months of patient efforts, Ruby started to warm up to MaryAnn and ventured out to her backyard for meals by early summer.

“It took months of consistency for her to come to me regularly,” MaryAnn told The Dodo. Gradually, Ruby began allowing MaryAnn to sit beside her, whisper comforting words, and even trust her enough to put on a collar, marking the beginning of Ruby’s understanding of love and care.

Ruby, who was once unaware of ordinary pleasures, learned the joy of playing with toys. MaryAnn introduced her to playing fetch, and Ruby soon reveled in the simple pleasure of chasing a ball. This marked an important milestone—an exuberant Ruby running freely, embracing the carefree spirit of a young dog.

Despite her progress, Ruby was still hesitant to set foot inside MaryAnn’s home. While some suggested that MaryAnn simply carry her indoors, she chose not to rush Ruby. “She was still fearful of force and confined spaces. She needed to move at her own pace,” MaryAnn explained.

Ruby eventually entered the house on her own initiative, a true testament to MaryAnn’s devotion. This moment not only signified Ruby’s acceptance of her new life but also the opening of her heart to love and safety.
