Taken at Sao Lourenco River Lodge in Brazil’s Pantanal wetlands, the image immortalizes the intense final moments of a caiman’s life as a female jaguar stalks and strikes.

Ford described the thrilling moment: “We were told a jaguar had been sighted about 30 minutes away as we left. We hurried to the spot and saw this sleek jaguar carefully stalking her prey, a completely unaware caiman.”

The photo captures the moment when the jaguar delivers a fatal bite—thanks to its highly sensitive teeth that allow big cats to target key blood vessels in their prey.

Alongside these captivating scenes of nature’s power, other winners in the National Competitions highlighted breathtaking images from photographers representing countries worldwide, emphasizing the global talent and perspective on nature photography.
