Tim Newton experienced an unexpected and heartwarming surprise one morning when he woke up to find a lynx family playing on his porch in Alaska.
Initially startled by the commotion outside, he soon realized it was no burglary but a delightful visit from a group of lynxes.
In an interview with The Dodo, Newton described the moment: “It was right near dawn. I heard some noises; it was like something scrambling on the deck.

Coming out of my slumber, I thought, ‘What the heck is that?’ So I put on my bathrobe and slowly eased back the curtain. And right there, 2 feet away, was a lynx kitten. He was sitting there watching his siblings race by.”
Captivated by the sight, Newton grabbed his camera and began snapping away as the lynx kittens frolicked on his porch, chasing each other and engaging in playful antics for around 40 minutes.

Reflecting on the experience, Newton marveled at the lynx mother’s dedication to her energetic offspring, quipping, “I’ve concluded that lynx must spend 1 percent of their waking lives chasing rabbits, and 99 percent chasing their kids. What a handful!”
Despite his attempts to interact with them, one of the kittens reacted with terror when Newton’s eyes showed behind the camera, illustrating the natural wariness of humans. However, the rest of the lynx family seemed unperturbed by his presence.

After their playtime, the mother lynx gathered her cubs and led them back into the forest, leaving Newton with a profound appreciation for the beauty of wildlife and the natural world.
Reflecting on the encounter, Newton expressed gratitude for the opportunity to witness such a rare and enchanting event: “We’re always thrilled to encounter wildlife. It makes me feel thankful — thankful for where I live. I’m thankful to have seen these lynxes up close.”
