A Georgia man received a 475-year prison sentence after a jury convicted him of dogfighting and animal cruelty in a case involving more than 100 dogs.

The sentence was imposed on January 30, 2025 in Paulding County Superior Court. Vincent Lemark Burrell, then 57, was found guilty after a four-day trial on 103 counts: 93 counts of dogfighting and 10 counts of cruelty to animals. Judge Dean C. Bucci imposed the maximum terms consecutively, according to prosecutors.

A delivery driver’s report started the case

The investigation began after an Amazon delivery driver reported seeing numerous dogs tied to fence posts with heavy chains at Burrell’s property in Dallas, Georgia.

Authorities executed search warrants on November 8, 2022. The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office said detectives found 106 dogs, mostly pit bull-type dogs, in widely varying condition. Some were emaciated, while others showed aggression toward other dogs. The sheriff’s office said the animals lacked adequate food, water, shelter and regular veterinary care.

Investigators also reported finding equipment and records associated with dogfighting. Prosecutors later presented evidence including a dog treadmill, breeding equipment, a break stick, veterinary medications, contracts involving specific dogs and documents connecting the animals to other known dogfighters.

The dogs entered rehabilitation

The sheriff’s office said all 106 dogs were placed with rescue organizations so rehabilitation could begin. Veterinary examinations documented neck irritation, scars consistent with fighting and, in some dogs, teeth that had been forcibly removed.

One puppy, later named Baby Shark, suffered from rickets linked to malnutrition and needed treatment for her front legs. She recovered in rescue care and was present in court for the sentencing.

Why the 475-year total was so large

The number did not come from a single 475-year count. The judge imposed the maximum sentence on each of the 103 convictions and ordered the terms to run consecutively. A state animal-crimes prosecutor told NPR that authorities believed it was the longest known sentence in a dogfighting case.

The case also demonstrates how one report can expose an operation that might otherwise remain hidden. Law-enforcement officials cited the delivery driver’s decision to speak up as an example of why suspicious conditions involving animals should be reported to local authorities.
