Every dog deserves a loving start to their day, nestled beside their human companion. However, many dogs aren’t as fortunate and find themselves alone and abandoned. One such dog was Babs, a stray wandering the streets of Dayton, Texas, feeling lost and heartbroken after being discarded by her previous owners.
Babs grew wary of people and avoided contact. Her health deteriorated, and she developed a skin condition known as mange. Her luck changed when a kind Samaritan saw her near a snow cone stand and promptly reached out to Kristen Erwin, a dedicated dog rescuer, who was quick to respond.

Upon arriving at the scene, Erwin found Babs in a sorry state—malnourished, with sore, mostly hairless skin peppered with just a few patches of fur. The dog’s forlorn expression deeply moved Erwin, who gently tried to coax the frightened animal toward her. Babs, however, remained hesitant, highlighting her despair.
Determined to help, Erwin devised a plan to safely capture Babs using a crate baited with appetizing treats. Driven by hunger, the dog tentatively approached the trap, lured by the aroma.
Once Babs was inside the crate, she initially panicked but was soon soothed by Erwin’s calming assurances that she was there to help her. Babs was taken to a veterinarian, where it was discovered she had heartworm disease and needed immediate treatment. A Houston-based non-profit, ThisIsHouston, kindly offered to cover the medical expenses.
Erwin then took Babs into her home as a foster. In this new environment, Babs began shedding her fears. She instinctively knew she was finally in safe hands and started to relax and bond with Erwin.

Reflecting on those early days, Erwin told The Dodo, “I didn’t know what to expect once I got her home. It turned out she was one of the sweetest dogs and truly only wanted attention and love. She was very affectionate and seemed very appreciative to be off the streets and out of the Texas heat. She quickly attached herself to us.”
In her foster home, Babs received all the attention and care she needed, including medicated baths and plenty of affection. Surrounded by love, her health improved, and her personality blossomed. As her skin healed, her confidence grew, transforming Babs into a stunning poodle with a shiny coat, full of joy and vitality.
With her recovery complete, Babs was ready to join her adoptive family, who had followed her journey closely. They were captivated by her resilience and applied to bring her home.

Babs embraced her new life with enthusiasm, finding herself in a family that adored her. She quickly bonded with her new fur sibling and human siblings. According to Erwin, “She is living the good life. Her family adores her and can’t believe how sweet and gentle she is.”
The heartwarming tale of Babs is truly uplifting. From abandonment to the loving embrace of a new family, she finally has the happy ending she deserves.
