A leisurely evening walk with their young Pit Bull named Kila unexpectedly became an extraordinary adventure for a family in Waianae, Hawaii. What started as a routine outing soon turned into a dramatic rescue mission, all because Kila spotted a chicken.
Intrigued by the sight, Kila pulled free from her owners and darted after the chicken. This innocent pursuit led her into an open storm culvert where she vanished from sight, turning the peaceful stroll into a tense and worrying situation.
According to the Hawaiian Humane Society (HHS), “Neither of them expected that a harrowing rescue would occur just four hours later.” The owners’ attempts to call Kila back proved futile as she journeyed deeper into the narrowing culvert, eventually becoming stuck.
Faced with an emergency, the family promptly dialed 9-1-1. In response, the Hawaiian Humane Society’s Field Services team and the Honolulu Fire Department arrived to assist. For the next four hours, rescuers worked persistently to reach Kila.
Despite initial attempts to coax her out of the culvert, it became apparent that Kila required more help.
Firefighters devised a plan to dig toward the pipe and cut through it, allowing them to free the trapped dog. The challenging task required planning and perseverance, but the team succeeded in rescuing Kila.
The Hawaiian Humane Society shared the incredible events on their social media, capturing the public’s imagination and drawing a heartfelt response across the nation.
Their post praised the Honolulu Fire Department Waianae Fire Station 26 for their unwavering efforts, saying: “Mahalo to the incredible team for working tirelessly to rescue Kila.”

In the end, Kila was unharmed and joyfully reunited with her family, her tail wagging as if nothing had happened despite the ordeal.
